Background : Multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) is a problem for TB prevention and eradication. Programmatic management of drug-resistant TB (PMDT) is a program for MDR TB. The objective of this study was to evaluate the proportion and characteristic of MDR TB patients at PMDT programme in Adam Malik Hospital, Medan, Indonesia. Methods : Cross-sectional descriptive study was done from medical records data, between January 2012 until July 2012. Subjects were MDR TB patients. Results : Of 114 suspected MDR TB, 14 patients were MDR TB (12.28%). The characteristics were 64.28% female, age 35-44 years in 42.86 patients, education 50% was level senior high school, 42.87% patients was house wife, 64.29% was married. All had a previously treated with tuberculosis drug. Dyspnea way common (57%). Chest x-ray infiltrate, nodule in 92.85% and cavities in 42.85% patients. Four patients (28.58%) resistant to rifampicin and INH; 2 patients (14.28%) resistant to rifampicin, INH, ethambutol; 3 patients (21.43%) resistant rifampicin, INH, streptomycin; 3 patients (21.42%) resistant to rifampicin, INH,ethambutol, streptomycin; 2 patients (14.28%) resistant to rifampicin, INH, ethambutol, streptomycin, kanamycin. Conclusion : The proportion of MDR TB patients was 12.28%. Female, young age, house wife, married, previous treated with tuberculosis drug, dyspnea, infiltrate, nodule, cavitie on chest x-ray were the main characteristic. (J Respir Indo. 2013; 33:221-9)
