Background: COPD is a progressive respiratory disease with chronic inflammatory of the airway frequently accompanied by extra pulmonary symptoms. C reactive protein was one of the inflammatory marker with high sensitivity in detecting systemic inflammation.
Methods: Experimental studies with stable COPD were 24 patients at the Polyclinic Hospital DR. M. Djamil Padang, Center for Lung Disease Treatment (BP4) Lubuk Alung Padang Pariaman and Prodia Laboratory between January to July 2014. Spirometry, GOLD classification, MMRC scale, and CRP levels were evaluated before and after 8 weeks of 250 mg/day Azithromycin. Then given Azithromycin 250 mg a day for 8 weeks, further examination of CRP to see the changes.
Results: Out of 24 COPD subjects, are more frequent than woman, and mostly with severe brinkman index former smoker (54,17%). Severe COPD (61,5%) and MMRC scale (58%) were more frequent. Mean CRP level before treatment was 2,80 (1,17-4,72) mg/L (median 25th-75th percentile). Improvement CRP level become 1,11 (0,27-1,19) mg/L, with p=0,000. MMRC scale also in significant improvement with p=0,008. Weak positive correlation between CRP level and MMRC scale before treatment r=-0,203, p=0,342 and weak negative correlation after treatment r=-0,093 and p=0,667.
Conclusion: There was decreased in CRP level and improvement of breathlessness on stable COPD patients with azithromycin 250 mg alternating day treatment. (J Respir Indo. 2014; 34: 191-7)
