Background: There is a correlation between elastin and pathogenesis of COPD in COPD patients. Desmosine is intermolecular and intramolecular cross link between the chains of elastin polypeptide. Elastin is the main component of lung connective tissue that maintains the elasticity of the lung. If there is damage to the lung, elastin is released from the lungs to the body fluids as desmosineand isodesmosine elastin peptide, therefore desmosine may be useful as a marker of elastin degradation in COPD.
Methods: In observational comparative cross sectional study, we collected data consecutively from stable COPD patients groupand healthy people group. Data collected from April 2010 until September 2010 in Persahabatan Hospital. We examined serumdesmosine using ELISA test.
Results: There were 20 stable COPD patients and 20 healthy control subjects. The mean of age in stable COPD patients was63.0±5.8 years, FEV1 1218.5±394.3, FEV1/FVC 52.8±10.2 % predicted. Desmosine level were increased (mean 4.4±7.1 ng/ml)compared with control subjects (smokers 0.6±0.4 ng/ml, nonsmokers 0.8±0.9 ng/ml) but not statistically significant. Desmosine level were statistically significant related to age, BMI and frequency of exacerbations in COPD patients.
Conclusion: This study found that desmosine level was increased in stable COPD patients compared with control subjects.
